Inspired by how classic rock records were once made, Chico Harpo and his bandmates went into All Welcome Records’ studio in Inglewood, CA on a hot summer day, plugged in and played. By letting their sweat and energy soak into the mix, new and vibrant takes of six songs from Harpo’s debut LP “Gonna Be Alright” were documented while tape machine and cameras rolled. What the listener gets is a raw and intimate window into a songwriter and his band at the peak of their talents. The ecstatic love of “A Thousand Zillion Hundred Dollar$” reaches a new urgency with a faster tempo than from the LP version. The mass shooting rant of “He’s In The News Again” gains poignant power in this stripped-down version. The epic arc of the title track “Gonna Be Alright” is flawless in the live setting as it ends in a triumphant blaze of glory. In this time of lockdown, Chico Harpo shows us how vital it is to experience the power of synergistic live performance.
